The speed of sound is determined by the following formula
- velocity = frequency x wavelength
- Speed = Distance
Time
Statistics
The speed of sound in air is = 330m.s-1 = 1200 k.hr-1 = Mach 1
Audible range of sound f = 10 Hz – 20kHz = 17m – 17mm
Two factors which affect the speed of sound
- Density - the higher the density the lower the speed
- Elasticity - the higher the elasticity the higher the speed
These two factors act together in any medium. In solids the elasticity is the overriding factor resulting in sound travelling faster in solids and slower in gases.
